€irePreneur: Funding in Irish companies falls sharply

€irePreneur: Funding in Irish companies falls sharply Is this due to 1. no investment opportunities 2. investment opportunities which are "too startup" More and more i see entrepreneurs avoiding the VC's, due to 1. lack of interest from VCs in startups and 2. the time it takes to raise cash (and the confidence bashing that goes with it :-) )

Fractals of Change: Nerd CEO - When Free is the Right Strategy "Three good reasons for giving things away are 1) to build a large network; 2) to establish a standard; 3) to establish a prospect base (which I'm not blogging about today). Once you have a large network or control a standard, you can use it to actually make money. " Great piece from Tom - sometimes it pays to be free !!

Genuine VC: An Entrepreneur's Perspective on Information Asymmetry in Bootstrapping

Genuine VC: An Entrepreneur's Perspective on Information Asymmetry in Bootstrapping This is a dilemma that many entrepreneurs face - and usually is the 1st trade off that has to happen. From my own experiences, you are better off surrounding yourself with at least 2 strong developers who can deliver on the product in a timely manner - and if you want good developers you need to spend $$ to ensure they can do their job well. It's a "penny wise, pound foolish" scenario for her - my fear is that she may end up with an inadequate product, minimal spend on product development and 100% of equity.

Interesting service? or complete disaster?

Just discovered this the other day - Pookmail Looks like something that might be useful if you need to give your address to something that looks dodgy - I can see it causing all sorts of problems with customer service though.

Less is More

I really enjoy Fred Wilson's blog - some great insights into the world of VC A recent post caught my eye - "Less is More" His last comment... "Our dream at Union Square Ventures is to one day fund a company that gets to a billion dollars of revenues with less than 10 employees and does it legally. We may never do it, but someone will. Because less is more." That is our dream too - you don't have to be selling Enterprise software at $500k a ticket any more to mke a Billion dollars in revenue. With the right mix of business model, online service, technology quality and distribution channels you can hit this - ebay, google, yahoo, etc have done it - others like craigslist, skype, etc are well on their way.... Less is more in today's world - the world of Web2.0

John Porcaro: mktg@msft: Reengineering Marketing

John Porcaro: mktg@msft: Reengineering Marketing "Effective marketing (IMHO) really does come down to listening to customers, discovering unmet needs (or wants), working with dev so they understand those needs, and communicating with those customers--in a way that resonates--so they know how our products or services effectively fulfill those needs. Without any of those pieces done well, there's a huge risk that everything begins to break down. "

Venturepreneur Partners : Venture Capital Reborn

Venturepreneur Partners : Venture Capital Reborn: "This is how we ended up defining the new model: * Significant financial success can be achieved by the VC and the entrepreneurs by investing early and exiting early – when appropriate. * Great marketing always beats great technology. Market development and product development should occur simultaneously. * The founders of each company and the venture firm principals should work together on the growth and/or exit strategy that provides maximum returns. * Companies are not acquired by pure coincidence. An early sale can be a win-win situation for all involved."
