Tablane -- another adventure begins.

We published the first beta of our Tablane browser on Friday 28th October at 5.59 pm. And nothing happened. My partner, Yongchun, and I, scratched our grizzled mawes, opened a bottle of wine, and congratulated each other on what we'd managed to do. With some part time help from two fine chaps, Barry Day and Paul Jackman, the two of us had just released a new Web browser from scratch in less than nine months. But it wasn't like a deadline in our previous lives with Red Fig when we'd complete a project at the 11th hour only to have it presented in front of several million viewers on British TV. Or when I arranged for URL put up on a TV programme for the very first time in April 1994 -- and saw a SPARC 2 nearly explode with the resulting traffic. This is much more low key -- an experiment in the power of the Internet to let good ideas rise and fall through the power of recommendation, and a little help from Google AdWords. Over the first weekend, we'd had about 100 downloads, and seen Tablane appear on a few blogs:

We've had a little feedback and issued a second release which fixes some of the first bug finds. So now, when we self-referentially run a search, it isn't only our own Google Ads on other people's sites we find, but something emerging out there. I'll be back to share thoughts on progress in the days and weeks ahead. So far, people are starting to notice our Lanes concept in the GUI, but we are really hoping that the Collections concept gathers some attention. This we think is where the power and innovation of our browser really lies...

I've been exposed to the business of open source for some time Homework: Read this great piece in BusinessWeek I'm still shocked by the lack of knowledge or the fear around open source - at the end of the day its another business model. Companies I admire doing open source Alfreso Socialtext Also check our this piece on SugarCRM If you look closely at these companies, you will notice a few trends 1. Tier 1 VC investment 2. Great management teams 3. Great products Who will be the 1st Irish company to do this business model on the big stage ?

Don Dodge on The Next Big Thing: "Microsoft will acquire my company"

Don Dodge on The Next Big Thing: "Microsoft will acquire my company" "Many start-ups have failed by focusing too much on their technology and not enough on the value they bring to customers and the channels they use to service the customer. Many times the early innovator fizzles, and a 'fast follower' comes in and makes all the money. "
